China Packaging Industry Association: Implementing management of packaging waste in fragile ecological areas

On August 3, representatives of upstream and downstream enterprises in the entire industrial chain of China's packaging industry jointly issued China's first "Environmental Protection Initiative for Sustainable Development of Packaging Industry" in Tuotuo River at the source of the Yangtze River, Wuhan in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and Shanghai at the mouth of the Yangtze River.

With the development of China’s economy and the convenience of transportation, industrial products continue to enter the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Packaging waste has become the main pollutant at the source of the Yangtze River, along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway and even the entire Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Yang Xin, president of the Green River Environmental Protection Promotion Association, introduced that the Qinghai-Tibet Highway passes through the source area of the Yangtze River in the Sanjiangyuan National Park, including the eastern edge of Hoh Xil. 80% of Tibet's freight is transported through the Qinghai-Tibet Highway. Truck drivers and tourists on both sides of the road discarded from the windows Of food and beverage packaging waste, with an average of more than 1,000 pieces per kilometer.

Wu Hongjun, Deputy Secretary-General of China Packaging Federation, said: “Sustainable development is an eternal topic in the packaging industry. How to establish plastic packaging in the Sanjiangyuan area The waste recycling system to protect the ecological environment of the source of the Three Rivers is worthy of every packaging person’s deep thinking and active actions. To this end, we must initiate packaging waste management in vulnerable ecological areas such as the Mother River and the "China Water Tower" ."

In the past few days, representatives participating in public welfare activities have picked up more than 100 pieces of various types of garbage along both sides of the Qinghai-Tibet Highway in the Yangtze River Source Area of Sanjiangyuan National Park, 4540 meters above sea level.

"Compared with plastic, aluminum products, paper product packaging, flexible packaging waste is more difficult to recycle, we are looking for technical solutions, such as all-polyolefin structure, pure paper structure, etc.; at the same time, actively fulfill corporate social responsibility, and join the industry. The downstream will jointly improve the recycling system of flexible plastic packaging waste and support more non-profit organizations in the recycling work." Said She Xin, president of consumer packaging company Amco Greater China.
